Evacuation of Akrotiri area extended until next week
The British Sovereign Base Areas authorities in Cyprus, in coordination with the government of the Republic of Cyprus, have decided to extend evacuation measures in the Akrotiri area at least until the end of next week. A reassessment of the situation is scheduled for next Saturday morning.
The decision was made following an analysis of the current situation and security considerations. Until then, the Akrotiri area will remain closed to residents.
People who were previously evacuated will continue to reside temporarily in two hotels in Limassol and at the Monastery of Saint George in Erimi, where accommodation has been organized for them.
Furthermore, schools in the area remain closed. According to the Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, the municipality is working with the Ministry of Education to find temporary locations for educational institutions so that students can continue their studies.
The search for premises is being conducted in cooperation with parents and school administrations affected by the extension of security measures.
