Farmers to be compensated for part of electricity costs due to drought

The authorities of Cyprus have approved a special emergency aid scheme for professional farmers whose electricity bills have sharply increased due to a three-year drought. The support covers the period from July 2024 to August 2025 and is intended to mitigate the financial impact of increased electricity use for irrigation, cooling, and crop protection.
Due to the lack of rainfall, the available water for irrigation has significantly decreased, and farmers had to rely more on pumps and irrigation systems. This has led to higher production costs and additional burden on farms, especially for those operating under professional agricultural tariffs.
The Cabinet has allocated 1 million euros for partial compensation of electricity consumption under code 011 for registered farmers — both individuals and companies or cooperatives. The Ministry of Agriculture will calculate the amount of aid for each recipient, and the EAC (ΑΗΚ) company will credit the amounts directly to their accounts. The funds will come from the ministry’s internal reserves without increasing the state’s overall budget.
