The state invested €3.5 million in the renovation of the Kourion archaeological complex

Cyprus Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou stated that the state intends to continue systematic investments in the preservation and development of archaeological sites. She made the statement during a visit to the Kourion archaeological complex, where she was briefed on large-scale restoration works and infrastructure upgrades.
According to Kassianidou, around €3.5 million has been invested in Kourion in recent years. The funds were used to replace protective coverings for mosaics and archaeological remains, modernize the electrical systems of the ancient theatre, and install new lighting, allowing the venue to host theatrical and musical events during the summer period.
In addition, artists’ dressing rooms were upgraded, the visitor centre was fully reconstructed, a new shop for visitors was opened, covered rest areas were created, and modern sanitary facilities were installed.
Special attention was also paid to digitalization: Kourion became one of the first archaeological sites in Cyprus to introduce digital guides with QR codes, providing visitors with additional information.
Accessibility for people with disabilities was another important focus. Toilets for persons with special needs were installed on site, wheelchair access is ensured during events, and Braille signage has been placed in several areas. The authorities are also working on additional solutions to further improve universal access to cultural heritage sites.
Speaking about security, Kassianidou stressed the need to strengthen the protection of archaeological sites and introduce modern, non-invasive video surveillance systems. She also highlighted the importance of awareness-raising efforts and combating the illegal trade in antiquities, describing archaeological trafficking as a serious threat to the country’s cultural heritage.
