Reports of cats disappearing from the grounds of a supermarket, where they had been under the care of animal rights activists for many years, have caused serious concern and strong public reaction.

According to complaints and eyewitness accounts in recent days, the animals were captured and taken away by unknown individuals. Despite measures taken, the cats have not been found, and volunteers are deeply worried about their fate.

As noted in a statement by the “Green Party – Citizen Cooperation” movement, the cats were neutered and received daily care, including food and water. Information from social media and eyewitness testimony indicates that an unknown person caught the animals and placed them in a vehicle.

It is reported that the individual’s details were passed to the Animal Protection Police on Saturday. Law enforcement took certain actions and, according to available information, contacted the person. However, the explanations provided were insufficient—the cats remain missing.

As of Wednesday, five days have passed without any positive results. Volunteers are in a state of despair, and the situation is generating increasing anger and concern in society.

Animal rights activists emphasize that the law prohibits releasing or abandoning an animal under human care in order to get rid of it. In this regard, they demand that the police:

  • identify and locate the responsible individual;
  • conduct a full investigation;
  • ensure the cats are returned to their previous location;
  • check reports of missing cats at least at two other supermarkets.

Additionally, anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the police immediately. It is noted, however, that citizens who tried to provide information the day before could not reach the Animal Protection Police.

Animal welfare organizations also report serious problems in the operations of the Animal Protection Police in Nicosia and across the country. Therefore, a meeting with the new Minister of Justice is planned to discuss the situation.

The case remains under public scrutiny and continues to provoke widespread concern.
