Israeli Nationals Arrested for Smuggling Large Shipment of Cigarettes into Cyprus
Larnaca Police are continuing their investigation into a major cigarette smuggling operation, during which 10,500 cartons of tobacco were seized, and five individuals were arrested.
According to the police, the suspects, aged 31, 34, 37, 37, and 39, were apprehended on Sunday as part of a coordinated operation led by Larnaca’s Anti-Drug Unit (YKAN).
Local media outlets report that the operation was orchestrated by Israeli nationals who purchased the tobacco products in the northern part of Cyprus. They had intended to smuggle the goods back to Israel for resale.
It is understood that four of the suspects were seen on Sunday loading boxes of goods onto a docked vessel at the Larnaca fishing port. Police officers confirmed that the boxes contained duty-free cigarettes, and all four men were arrested on the spot.
Further searches were carried out at the suspects’ hotel room, apartment, and two vehicles. In addition to the cigarettes, a substantial amount of money and 2 grams of cocaine were found. This led to the arrest of a 34-year-old woman.
All five suspects are expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court on Monday.
