Chaos with driving licenses: woman received three fines despite renewal of documents

A recent incident with the issuance of driving documents has stirred public opinion: a woman, despite renewing her driving licenses for three cars on time, was fined three times — the Transport Department system (TOM) failed to register the update, leaving the records as expired.
According to the testimony of Petrula Piereti, voiced on the program “First Page” (“Πρωτοσέλιδο”), after she updated all the necessary documents for her three vehicles, she was fully confident everything was in order. Yet just a few days later she received notifications of fines for driving without valid licenses. It turned out that the renewal information had simply not been transferred into the TOM system, and the database continued to mark the documents as invalid.
Piereti also noted that a similar situation had happened last year — with her daughter. At that time, the citizen, not realizing the problem, did not take further steps, and the conflict did not attract TOM’s attention, remaining unnoticed.
It is clear that such cases are not isolated. Reports indicate that dozens of citizens also mistakenly received fines despite renewing their licenses. The reason is system failures that prevent the updated data from being accepted, leaving vehicles in a “no documents” legal status. Some drivers, unaware of the error, drove for months believing everything was in order.
In response, the Department of Road Transport (TOM) reported that it is already working with the Department of Information Services to fix the issues. Together, both departments are seeking and implementing a final, reliable solution so that such problems will not be repeated in the future.
