Significant archaeological finds discovered in the ancient port of Pegeia

Archaeologists have uncovered important finds in the area of the ancient port of Pegeia, shedding new light on the maritime and trade history of western Cyprus. Excavations were carried out both in the coastal zone and underwater, at the site where the city’s port existed in antiquity.
According to the Department of Antiquities, the discoveries include architectural elements of port structures, fragments of stone constructions, and items related to maritime trade. Some of the objects date back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, confirming the port’s active use over many centuries.
Experts note that the discovery confirms Pegeia’s strategic role as an important maritime hub in the region. The port was used not only for trade but also as a shelter for ships.
Research continues. All finds have been documented and are under state protection. In the future, the data may be used to create a protected archaeological zone and educational projects.
