Cyprus has joined the ranks of European Union countries with the lowest risk of poverty or social exclusion among households with children. According to Eurostat data published on Wednesday, in 2025 this figure on the island was only 12.2%. This is significantly lower than the EU average, which reaches 22.1% for families with children.

Interestingly, the situation in Cyprus differs from the general European trend. In most EU countries, the risk of poverty is higher specifically among households with children, however, in Cyprus, the figure for households without children was notably higher — 22.1%. This indicates more effective social support for families with children compared to other categories of the population.

For comparison, the highest poverty risk rates among families with children were recorded in Spain (29%), Romania (29.4%), and Bulgaria (29.1%). At the same time, along with Cyprus, low risk levels were noted in Slovenia (10.4%) and the Netherlands (11.7%). Thus, Cyprus consolidates its position as one of the most prosperous EU countries in terms of social protection for families.

Overall, the data show that in 16 out of 27 EU countries, families with children remain a more vulnerable category of the population. However, the Cypriot model demonstrates that with the right social policy, this risk can be significantly reduced. Experts note that maintaining such indicators will depend on economic stability and the effectiveness of social support measures in the future.
