Cyprus Beefs Up Security Following Threat to Close Strait of Hormuz
In response to reports of a possible closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which could affect up to a fifth of global oil traffic, Cypriot authorities have taken extra precautions and recommended heightened vigilance for Cyprus-flagged vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes daily. Even the threat of a blockade has already rattled markets, sparking forecasts of oil prices surging above $100 per barrel.
Consequently, the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus has urged owners and operators of Cyprus-flagged ships to avoid areas of political instability and armed conflict, adhering to enhanced security protocols.
These measures come amid general regional instability following airstrikes and retaliatory actions, increasing risks to international trade and energy routes.
