Cyprus to invest €3.3 million in film and television development to attract foreign projects
The Ministry of Finance of Cyprus has allocated €3.3 million in subsidies for foreign film projects and TV series in order to promote the island as an attractive filming location and tourist destination, according to official representatives.
This measure is part of the Audiovisual Industry Promotion Plan, approved by the ministry last month. The plan covers the period from August 8 of this year to July 30, 2027, with a total budget of €25 million.
The main goals of the program are to increase Cyprus’ international recognition as a film production hub, attract foreign investment, and create new jobs in the national film industry.
Of the €3.3 million allocated, funds have already been distributed to several specific projects. More than €1.7 million has gone to three versions of the show Roast on the Coast for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Each version will consist of six 30-minute episodes featuring Scandinavian comedians traveling across Cyprus and sharing funny personal stories. The show will be streamed on Amazon Prime.
Another €604,000 will support the ninth season of Superstars, where former athletes compete in various disciplines on the island. This project has already created 73 jobs, 29 of which are held by Cypriots.
In addition, more than €1.5 million is earmarked for two other projects. The first is the second season of the drama series The Ex-Wife, which generated 98 jobs. The second is the crime drama Sisters in Crime, scheduled to premiere at the end of this year.
Thus, the government of Cyprus is betting on the development of film and television as part of its cultural and economic strategy, expecting that attracting international projects will bring new investments and strengthen the country’s appeal to tourists.
