Cypriot Police Warn of New Fraud Scheme on WhatsApp
The Republic of Cyprus Police have issued a warning about a new fraud scheme on WhatsApp. This time, scammers are impersonating vigilantes and police officers.
Reports indicate that scammers are using WhatsApp to invite unsuspecting individuals to video calls, pretending to represent the police. These interactions usually occur in English. During these conversations, the fraudulent officers ask victims for personal and banking information, such as identification cards and debit or credit card details.
The police emphasize that all such calls are fraudulent and have no affiliation with law enforcement agencies.
Citizens are urged to be particularly vigilant and not respond to calls or instructions from these scammers. Under no circumstances should you share any codes received on your mobile phone.
If you disclose banking details during a conversation with scammers, it is crucial to immediately notify your bank to prevent unauthorized use of your information.
