Paphos team wins national robotics championship for the first time
A robotics team from Paphos has become the first in the region's history to win the Cyprus National Robotics Championship.
Students from Lumio Private School took first place at the 5th Pancyprian Robotic Day & FIRST Tech Challenge Cyprus 2026, held on March 7–8. Previously, the national title had always gone to teams from Nicosia.
Thanks to this victory, the team earned the right to represent Cyprus at the FIRST Championship, which will take place in late April in Houston, USA. This is one of the world's largest robotics competitions, annually attracting over 50,000 participants and spectators from more than 70 countries.
Lumio Private School, where the team members study, opened in Paphos in 2024 and is currently in the process of obtaining accreditation for International Baccalaureate programs.
This victory continues a series of successful performances for the team: last season, they received the Connect Award for community contribution and competed in the European Championship in the Netherlands, becoming the first Cypriot team to reach the playoff stage of an international robotics tournament.
Team members noted that the trip to Houston will provide them with valuable international experience that will help develop the STEM community in Cyprus.
