Larnaca Wants to Build a New Theater on Oil Workers' Land
The Municipality of Larnaca is considering the possibility of opening a new indoor municipal theater, which may emerge not far from the oil refineries.
"There is a proposal to build a new indoor municipal theater, which will be constructed on the land that will be transferred to the municipality after the departure of oil companies," said Mayor Andreas Vyras in an interview with the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
According to the mayor, the initial plan was to build the theater in the Pampoula area in the city center, but the process of acquiring state land in this area proved to be challenging.
Instead, the municipality will receive land from oil companies on the road between Larnaca and Dekelia. This land will be provided in exchange for a license for private development in Vasiliko when they relocate their activities to the energy center.
This proposal will be implemented as part of the merger of the municipalities of Larnaca and Livadia with the rural community of Oroklini as part of more extensive local government reforms taking place in Cyprus in 2024.
According to the mayor, the proposal has been approved by the Larnaca City Council, and now the municipality plans to secure funding from the European Union to assist in building the theater, considering the city's candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2030.
In addition, the municipality intends to renovate the existing municipal theater George Lykourgos and the "Skala" theater in the city.
