Nicosia court fines companies €12,000 after fatal workplace accident
The Nicosia District Court has imposed a total fine of €12,000 following an investigation into a fatal workplace accident. The case was initiated by the Department of Labour Inspection due to violations of health and safety legislation.
P. Orphanides Steel Constructions Ltd, a company involved in metal constructions, was fined €6,500. The court found that protective railings were not installed at the site, which led to a worker falling from a height of approximately 3.37 meters and losing their life. A lack of proper supervision over the work was also noted.
The contracting company Mont Blanc Constructions Ltd received a fine of €1,500 for violating safety requirements that could have led to worker injuries.
A further €2,000 fine was imposed on Michalakis Tomazos & Son Ltd, the project owner, for the lack of a health and safety plan at the construction site and the failure to appoint a safety coordinator.
Additionally, one individual was fined €2,000 for violations of safety regulations at temporary construction sites.
