The identity of the man found off the coast of Avdimou has not yet been established — DNA results are pending
The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus continue their investigation following the discovery of a man’s body off the coast of Avdimou. At present, the identity of the deceased has not been officially confirmed — DNA analysis results are expected to play a key role.
The body was found on Wednesday in a coastal area under the jurisdiction of the British military bases in Cyprus. According to investigators, the state of decomposition did not allow for immediate visual identification.
A forensic autopsy was carried out by the coroner of the British bases. Biological samples were taken to establish the identity of the deceased and the exact cause of death. The results of the examinations are awaited.
The police have not officially confirmed a connection between the discovered body and the disappearance of Vladislav Baumgertner, the former head of Uralkali. At the same time, sources close to the investigation report that certain items of clothing match the description of what the missing businessman was wearing. Final conclusions will only be made after the DNA analysis is completed.
Baumgertner disappeared on January 7 after leaving his home in the Pissouri area. The search operation was conducted in the area where his mobile phone signal was last detected and included ground, coastal, and aerial searches. The efforts were complicated by difficult weather conditions.
Law enforcement agencies emphasize that at this stage all versions of events are being considered — from an accident to a possible crime. The investigation also stated that so far no signs of violent bodily injuries have been established and no links have been identified with other high-profile cases, including the recent death of a Russian diplomat in Nicosia.
