Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has proposed opening a new vehicle crossing point at Agiou Ilarionou Street in the Kaimakli district.

The initiative was discussed with the Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou as an alternative to the long-discussed opening of a checkpoint in Mia Milia.

According to the mayor, while the opening of the Mia Milia crossing remains a technical priority, the difficulties involved have led to the proposal of the Kaimakli option. He assesses this as a feasible alternative that could be realized following necessary infrastructure work.

Prountzos emphasized that this proposal does not cancel plans for Mia Milia or the Athienou–Pyroi–Aglandjia crossing, but rather aims to find alternative solutions.

The mayor noted that the Agios Dometios crossing is under severe strain, with long queues, delays, and problems for local residents. Currently, only three out of seven inspection booths are operational, and they are not always fully staffed.

Additional delays are linked to stricter vehicle checks in line with Cyprus's requirements for full accession to the Schengen Area.

Prountzos also mentioned that he has been discussing the idea of opening a crossing in Kaimakli with the mayor of the northern part of Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, over the past year.
