Young turtle "Paraskevi" released back into the sea near Limassol after rehabilitation
The Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Center (CMARC) under the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) released a young turtle named Paraskevi into the sea off the coast of Limassol after about three months of treatment.
The Caretta caretta turtle was found by Limassol residents in July. The animal was emaciated, infested with numerous parasites, and had signs of an old injury on its flipper. It was brought to CMARC, located in Meneou, Larnaca, where part of the facility functions as a Sea Turtle Rescue Center.
After rehabilitation and care, the turtle returned to its natural habitat. DFMR notes that it participates in the LIFE ADAPTS project together with partners from Cyprus, Italy, and Greece. The project aims to implement innovative practices, including environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis and satellite telemetry to protect species from the effects of climate change.
Citizens are asked to notify DFMR if they find an injured sea turtle. In the case of a dead animal, it is recommended to contact the local community or municipality for further action.
