Ban on Away Fans Attending Football Matches in Cyprus

19.01.2024 / 14:32

The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has prohibited away fans from participating in all official football matches until the end of the season.

The decision will come into effect on January 26 and will impact games in the first and second divisions, as well as the Coca Cola Cup. Teams playing away matches in the first division will be allowed to bring up to 50 people - members of boards of directors, sponsors, and players not included in the squads on match days. In the second division, only 25 people will be permitted.

The decision was made after a firework launched from the stands hit a player on the head during a Coca Cola Cup match on Tuesday between "Nea Salamina" and "APOEL." As a result of the incident, player Giorgos Papageorgiou suffered hearing damage. The hooligan who threw the firecracker has already been apprehended.

Following the incident, the CFA and the Players' Association (Pasp) called for radical measures to combat violence in football.
