New Support System for People with Disabilities Being Prepared in Cyprus
The President of the Republic of Cyprus has announced a major social reform aimed at strengthening the welfare state and improving support for people with disabilities.
During a Council of Ministers meeting, the head of state declared that for the first time since the founding of the Republic of Cyprus, a unified and comprehensive legislative framework will be created to regulate the participation of people with disabilities in social life and their independent living.
A key element of the reform will be decoupling social benefits from income for individuals with severe disabilities. According to the President, this will bolster their dignity, autonomy, and capacity for independent living.
The implementation of the reform is budgeted at 106 million euros for the 2026–2028 period.
Authorities also plan to strengthen cooperation with non-governmental organizations and appoint special accessibility officers in every ministry.
Additionally, the government has decided to utilize National Guard aircraft for the emergency transportation of patients and donor organs for transplantation.
