The government of the Republic of Cyprus is stepping up efforts to tackle the island’s growing water crisis. With the situation worsening due to prolonged drought, the Ministry of Agriculture is drafting a bill aimed at cracking down on water misuse — including increasing fines for washing cars, streets, and other surfaces with a hose.

The goal is to curb water wastage and address the severe shortages affecting many parts of the country. The proposal, currently under review by the Cabinet, calls for higher penalties for using a hose to wash sidewalks, driveways, streets, porches, railings, building exteriors, windows, vehicles, and even private boats.

If the bill is approved, the fixed penalty for such water misuse will rise from £30 to €100, and up to €300 for repeat offenses.

For more serious violations that go to court, the punishment could increase from three to six months in prison, while fines could go up from £300 to €3,000. Notably, if the offense is committed by an employee, the employer would be held responsible and receive the out-of-court fine.

District municipalities will be designated as the competent authorities in charge of enforcing the new rules and handling public complaints. If approved by the Council of Ministers, the proposed changes will be forwarded to the House of Representatives for final approval.

It’s worth noting that Larnaca authorities have already introduced fines for washing cars and pavements with a hose this summer as part of their local drought response.
