The police in the Republic of Cyprus are investigating a 31-year-old man who sold his mother's property to pay off debts due to sports betting. The son forged the woman's signature and sold two apartments in Larnaca and two houses in Limassol at a bargain price.

According to the philenews publication, in mid-January 2024, his 67-year-old mother complained to the police about her son. Subsequently, the man was arrested and taken into custody.

Yesterday, he was brought to court, where the case was registered. The police demanded that the defendant remain in custody until the trial began, and his lawyer did not object to this decision.

According to available information, the man raised a total of 370,000 euros from someone else's real estate. According to the applicant, the story began in August of last year when her 31-year-old son asked her for money to pay off debts. The woman withdrew 40,000 euros from the bank and paid off the creditors from whom her son presumably borrowed money.

Later, the son revealed that he owed 250,000 euros to unknown individuals. The 67-year-old woman decided to help him and turned to the Land Registry to sell her real estate. However, at this stage, it was found that two apartments owned by her in the Larnaca province were sold with a forged power of attorney with her signature. In addition, she discovered that a sales contract for her houses in Limassol was also registered in the Land Registry.

According to the woman, both apartments were sold to unknown individuals, and two houses in Limassol were also bought by an unknown foreigner.

According to media reports, the man admitted that he sold the apartments due to his addiction to betting on football matches. Having lost completely, the gambling addict decided to sell his mother's property to pay off debts.
