Cyprus may introduce SOS GPS bracelets for people with dementia

The Ministry of Health is considering the creation of a separate service that would issue special electronic bracelets or watches with GPS and an SOS button to people with dementia. The devices would help respond quickly if a person gets lost or is in a dangerous situation. The ministry notes that the initiative is based on a similar approach already used in the ELPIS app for victims of domestic violence.
These bracelets are equipped with an emergency call button and a geolocation module. When the SOS button is pressed or a person moves outside their usual routes, a signal with coordinates is sent to relatives or the responsible service. In emergencies, the system can transmit data automatically, allowing faster location of the person and reducing the risk of dangerous situations.
The idea has already been discussed in the previous Interdisciplinary Committee on Dementia and is expected to be revisited after the formation of a new committee. It is anticipated that the project could be included in the updated National Dementia Plan. Final costs will be determined after selecting specific devices and calculating needs—based on data from organizations working with people with dementia, social services, and doctors. According to the plan, bracelets or watches will be issued only to patients with a confirmed diagnosis, upon referral from a neurologist or psychiatrist.
