Cyprus may ban e-scooters for teenagers under 17
A legislative change is being discussed in Cyprus that could raise the minimum age for using e-scooters to 17.
The corresponding proposal was submitted by MP Fotini Tsiridou. Currently, using such personal mobility devices is allowed from the age of 14, but authorities believe the age threshold needs to be raised due to the increasing number of accidents and road risks.
According to the MP, regulating only scooters is insufficient, as many teenagers might switch to e-bikes, which can sometimes reach speeds of 50–60 km/h and are effectively more like motorcycles.
The issue has already been discussed at a meeting of the parliamentary transport committee. The Ministry of Transport reported that two options for the age limit are being considered — 16 or 17 years. While the European Transport Safety Council often recommends a minimum age of 16, the final decision will be made by parliament.
Authorities also plan to prepare a separate bill to regulate the use of electric bicycles and other personal mobility devices.
