In Nicosia, Cyprus, two men were detained following a court-authorized vehicle search that led to the discovery and seizure of large quantities of untaxed tobacco products, law enforcement reported. The search was conducted on Tuesday as part of an investigation into related offenses.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 127,000 cigarettes, 40,000 units of heated tobacco, 96.5 kg of rolling tobacco, 102 kg of hookah tobacco, and 1,000 small cigars. Alleged offenses include negligent and reckless acts, dangerous driving, illegal possession and transportation of untaxed goods, and malicious damage.
The detainees, aged 37 and 39, are expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court today for a remand hearing. The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is continuing its investigation into the origin of the seized goods and potential links to other smuggling cases.
Practical information for residents: such seizures aim to prevent illicit tobacco trade and protect the legal market; if you notice suspicious tobacco sales, please contact the police. Further official details on the investigation will be released following additional procedural actions.
