A new procedure for the immediate suspension of driving licenses for drivers posing a threat to public safety has been introduced in Cyprus.

As reported by the Cyprus Police, the authority to suspend driving licenses has been delegated to the Chief of Police by the Minister of Transport in his role as the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

From April 6, 2026, a suspension notice can be served directly at the scene of a roadside check by a police officer if serious violations are detected.

The grounds for immediate license suspension are:

  • driving under the influence of drugs;
  • refusal to provide a saliva sample for a drug test;
  • repeated driving under the influence of alcohol within 12 months;
  • refusal to provide a breath sample for an alcohol test without a valid reason.

Such violations are considered serious and are referred to court.

To have the driving license returned, the driver must submit a medical report to the Cyprus Road Transport Department confirming they can drive safely. A medical board review may also be required.

According to authorities, the new procedure is intended to speed up enforcement and improve road safety.
