Cyprus discusses introduction of cybersecurity lessons in schools
The Cyprus Parliamentary Committee on Education discussed the need to implement cybersecurity education in schools and develop a national strategy in this field.
The initiator of the discussion, MP Savia Orphanidou, emphasized that cybersecurity is becoming a key element of the modern digital environment, especially regarding the protection of children and adolescents. According to her, internet use begins at a very early age, so it is vital to foster a culture of safe online behavior starting from the initial stages of education.
The main risks identified were internet addiction, cyberbullying, sexual harassment, and the rise in juvenile delinquency. In this regard, a bill is being considered to introduce a dedicated school subject focused on cybersecurity and safe internet use.
Police representatives reported that in 2025 alone, 117 complaints related to cyberbullying were recorded. They stressed the importance of prevention and educational programs already being conducted in schools through lectures and practical sessions.
Experts also noted that current measures are insufficient, and without systemic integration of cybersecurity into the school curriculum, it will be difficult to change the situation.
The Ministry of Education stated that digital literacy issues are already partially integrated into the learning process, but work in this direction will continue.
