In Cyprus, police detained a 58-year-old bus driver on Sunday evening on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway following a positive preliminary breathalyzer test.
According to police, around 21:00, members of the Headquarters Traffic Unit (ΟΠΟΔ Αρχηγείου) stopped the bus for an inspection. The preliminary test showed a reading of 44 μg%, which significantly exceeds the maximum allowed limit of 9 μg%. The driver was taken to the Pera Chorio Police Station (Αστυνομικός Σταθμός Πέρα Χωρίου) for a final analysis, but he failed to provide a satisfactory sample.
Following the detention, the driver's license was seized and immediately suspended. The man was charged in writing and released pending a court summons at a later stage of the proceedings. The investigation is being conducted by the Pera Chorio Police Station.
Practical information for residents: the maximum allowable breath alcohol level is specified as 9 μg%; in the event of a positive result and refusal to provide a sample, police officers have the right to seize and suspend the driver's license, as well as initiate criminal prosecution in accordance with the established procedure.
