Two Turbulent Air Masses Expected in Cyprus — Yellow Warning Possible
The Meteorological Service in Cyprus reported on March 18, 2026, the approach of two cyclonic disturbances that will bring local rain and thunderstorms, and warned of a high probability of a yellow warning being issued for March 19, stated service representative Andreas Hadjigeorgiou.
According to the service, a barometric low centered over northern Egypt is moving into the area and will begin to have an effect as early as Wednesday evening, first causing scattered short-term showers and then local rain with a chance of thunderstorms.
On Thursday, March 19, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast mainly after noon; the expected yellow warning for inland and mountainous areas will likely be in effect from noon until late evening.
Following the first front, a second disturbance will approach from the west, affecting the island from Friday to Sunday, ensuring unstable weather with periodic local rain and isolated, possibly intense, thunderstorms. Sleet or snow is not ruled out on the peaks of Troodos.
Temperatures on Wednesday reached 22 °C in central areas and on the coast, and around 16 °C in the high mountains. On Thursday, 20–21 °C is forecast in central areas and on the coast; a slight decrease is expected on Saturday, falling below the seasonal climate averages.
A warning has already been issued for the coasts, primarily addressed to fishermen, regarding very strong and occasionally gale-force north-easterly to easterly winds of 6–7 on the Beaufort scale. In the following days, the wind direction will change to south-westerly or north-westerly with periodic strengthening.
