Municipal Police to Be Introduced in Cyprus

A new police unit — the municipal police — will be established in Cyprus. This was announced by Minister of Justice Marios Hartsiotis. He noted that the provision is part of local government reforms.
The purpose of the new unit is to avoid distracting the criminal police from more serious matters. Municipal police officers will handle everyday issues such as noise complaints, illegal parking, and supervision of restaurant operations. The service will operate around the clock.
According to Hartsiotis, the draft law has already been submitted for approval to the Union of Municipalities. The document is currently undergoing legal processing at the Ministry of Justice.
“There are no fundamental disagreements. The creation of the new institution will ensure better government oversight of the municipalities,” the minister said.
