A zero tax rate on essential goods has been proposed in Cyprus

Member of the “Volt” party, Alexandra Attalides, has proposed an amendment to the VAT Law to establish a zero tax rate on essential goods. Specifically, this concerns:
- baby diapers,
- adult diapers,
- women’s hygiene products.
The explanatory note states that these items are essential, and even a reduced VAT rate disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, exacerbating social and economic inequality.
The proposal aligns with a broader social policy strategy aimed at supporting families, improving the living standards of the elderly, and promoting gender equality.
“For the Volt party, tax justice is the key to social cohesion. Exempting these goods from VAT is not only an economic measure, but also a step toward a fairer society,” the statement says.
