Rising Fatal Traffic Accidents in Cyprus
The Republic of Cyprus has witnessed an increase in traffic accident fatalities in 2024 compared to last year.
According to the Traffic Department of the Chief of Police, 17 people have lost their lives in 14 fatal accidents on Cypriot roads since the start of the year.
During the same period last year, there were 12 fatal accidents with 12 fatalities.
This marks a 16.7% increase in the number of fatal accidents and a 41% increase in road deaths.
Fatalities have risen in four out of six provinces in Cyprus. The most significant increase was in Limassol, where three more people died in accidents compared to last year. Larnaca reported two additional deaths, while Nicosia and Morphou each saw one more fatality. Notably, there have been no fatal collisions due to excessive alcohol consumption this year.
It's worth noting that four of this year's victims died in a horrific accident on New Year's Eve at a controlled intersection in Limassol.
The study also highlights that in 2022 and 2023, Cyprus saw an unprecedented reduction in road fatalities.
Earlier reports indicated that most serious accidents with injuries and fatalities in Cyprus this year are occurring on urban roads rather than highways.
