Instances of violence against nurses and other medical staff have become more frequent in Cyprus, according to Pasydy nurses' union representative Prodromos Argyridis.

According to him, new incidents occur in emergency departments approximately every two to three months, during which hospital staff are subjected to attacks.

Argyridis noted that medics are seriously concerned about the situation and fear that without a solution, cases of violence could become even more severe.

Union representatives have already appealed to the police to increase monitoring and law enforcement presence in hospitals. Despite the fact that laws with stricter penalties for attacks on healthcare workers have been passed in recent months, the union says the situation has not yet changed.

Currently, about 200 nurses work in emergency departments across the island, providing daily care to patients.

The problem of violence against medical personnel has been discussed in Cyprus for several years. In 2024, following a patient's attack on doctors and nurses at Nicosia Hospital, medical workers even held a two-hour strike demanding stronger security measures.
