In Cyprus, a child lost vision while playing with a laser pointer
A child in Cyprus lost their vision after playing with a laser toy. The State Health Organization (Okypy) issued a warning about the danger of such devices.
According to Okypy, the child's vision loss was caused by a laser pointer purchased online. During play, the children looked directly into the flashlight, resulting in multiple burns to the retina - the membrane at the back of the eye containing light-sensitive cells that enable vision.
After the game, one of the children lost vision in one eye. The injured child was examined at the ophthalmology clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital.
In response to the incident, Okypy urged parents to check the toys their children have access to.
Medical professionals emphasize that one should not stare directly at laser beams or point them at other people, mirrors, or other reflective surfaces. These recommendations apply to all laser toys.
The organization added that the public should be particularly cautious, as there are few opportunities to repair damage in the event of injury, as the laser beam remains powerful even when it is several meters away from the source.
In the event of a laser eye injury in children, Okypy urged people to immediately contact the emergency department at 112 or the ophthalmology clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital at 22603550.
