Road Accidents in Cyprus: A Decrease in Fatalities and Injuries
In recent years, Cyprus has seen a decline in the number of serious road traffic accidents (RTAs) that result in fatalities and injuries. The only exception was last year. Official data released by the Road Police Department covers a five-year period.
According to the report, aside from last year, when the number of fatal accidents increased, the overall number of injuries from road accidents in Cyprus has been gradually decreasing.
The Road Police reported that in 2020, there were 48 fatal accidents, resulting in 48 deaths. Additionally, 185 serious accidents left 211 people severely injured, 108 minor accidents resulted in 218 injuries, and 165 collisions caused material damage. In total, there were 506 accidents, with 477 people injured.
In 2021, 44 fatal accidents were recorded, with 45 deaths. There were also 207 serious accidents, which injured 252 people, 75 minor accidents with 194 injuries, and 96 accidents involving material damage. In total, 422 accidents took place, injuring 491 people.
In 2022, there were 35 fatal accidents, resulting in 37 deaths. There were also 225 serious collisions, which left 253 people injured, 112 minor accidents that caused 215 injuries, and 183 accidents involving material damage. In total, there were 555 accidents, with 505 people injured.
The lowest number of fatal accidents in history was recorded in 2023: 34 deaths, 192 serious accidents (resulting in 232 injuries), 96 minor accidents (with 202 injuries), and 186 accidents causing material damage. In total, 506 accidents occurred, injuring 468 people.
In 2024, 36 fatal accidents were reported (41 deaths), 185 serious accidents (226 injured), 86 minor accidents (174 injured), and 170 collisions with no fatalities. In total, there were 477 accidents, resulting in 441 injuries.
The Road Police Department attributes the decrease in fatalities and injuries to several key factors, including enhanced targeted measures by the police, better management of traffic lights, and increased public awareness of road safety regulations.
