In Cyprus, a week of road traffic rules compliance kicks off: checks will take place across the country
From March 11 to March 17, Cyprus will host a week-long campaign to monitor compliance with road traffic rules. Enhanced checks will be conducted on roads across the country.
According to the police press service, particular attention will be given to enforcing the use of seat belts, both in the front and back seats, as well as child seats and boosters when transporting minors.
National road checks will commence today, Monday, March 11, 2024, and will continue until Sunday, March 17, 2024.
A joint campaign will also be conducted simultaneously at the European level as part of cooperation between the Cyprus police and the European Road Police Network ROADPOL.
The ultimate goal of the safety and awareness week is to reduce serious and fatal injuries in road traffic accidents and to increase awareness among drivers and passengers.
Police emphasized that seat belts remain the most effective means of protection in vehicles. According to analysis for the three-year period of 2020 - 2022, 56.9% of drivers and passengers of motor vehicles who died in traffic accidents were not wearing seat belts. Additionally, according to international statistics, 75% of people ejected from a car during a collision are killed.
At the international level, the use of restraint systems (seat belts, child seats, and boosters) is recommended as the best protection against ejection from a car.
ROADPOL is an annual campaign conducted in European countries where police enhance traffic control. Its goal is to minimize fatalities and serious injuries in traffic accidents.
