Cyprus Recovers from Storm "Bora": Assessing the Damage
Authorities in Cyprus are working to evaluate the damage caused by storm "Bora," which brought severe weather to the island on Tuesday. The storm left flooded roads and widespread power outages in its wake.
Severe Weather Disrupts Daily Life
The storm unleashed powerful winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms across many areas around midday on Tuesday. Streets in Limassol were quickly submerged, causing significant disruptions. The Paphos–Limassol highway was particularly affected, with torrential rain and poor visibility forcing authorities to temporarily suspend traffic.
In Paphos, intense rainfall led to flooding in several shops. Power outages were reported throughout the day in many areas, including Nicosia, which faced similar disruptions.
Rainfall Totals and Affected Areas
The storm brought heavy rain to the western, central, and eastern parts of the island. Limassol recorded the highest rainfall, with 28.8 mm, followed by Paphos at 12.7 mm, Cape Greco with 10 mm, and several mountainous weather stations reporting over 10 mm of precipitation.
Power Outages
The extreme weather also caused significant damage to the power grid, with three medium-voltage network faults reported in the provinces of Larnaca, Nicosia, and Limassol.
Weather Update
The Meteorology Department extended its yellow weather warning until 9 a.m. on Wednesday. However, by this morning, storm "Bora" had begun to subside and move away from Cyprus.
