New marine environment protection rules introduced in Cyprus: fines up to €20,000 and imprisonment

On March 20, 2026, new rules for the protection of the marine environment came into force in Cyprus. This was reminded by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

Amendments to the legislation were approved by parliament and published in the official government gazette, after which they immediately took effect. The new rules establish strict prohibitions for both ordinary citizens and professional sea users.

According to the regulations, dolphins, whales, and the European eel are included in the list of strictly protected species. It is now forbidden to disturb, feed, or perform any actions that could affect their natural behavior, including movement, reproduction, or rest.

Regarding sea turtles, it is prohibited to destroy or move their nests and eggs, as well as to touch protective cages and warning signs. Furthermore, it is forbidden to drive cars on beaches where turtles lay their eggs.

On Limni beach, from May 15 to September 30, it is forbidden to set up sun loungers, umbrellas, caravans, tents, and other similar structures.

In the Polis — Gialia marine area, at depths of up to 10 meters, motorboats are prohibited from passing or anchoring. An exception is made only for small coastal fishing vessels.

Access to sea caves inhabited by the Mediterranean monk seal is only possible with a special permit from the department director.

The new rules also completely prohibit the discharge of any waste into the sea, both from land and from vessels.

The authorities emphasize that the measures are aimed at strengthening the protection of marine species and sensitive natural areas. Violators face fines of up to €20,000 and imprisonment for up to one year.
