The Famagusta District Court has issued a sentence in the case of cruel treatment of a kangaroo whose carcass was being butchered in the courtyard of a residential complex in Deryneia. The main defendant was sentenced to 14 months in prison. The court took into account not only the nature of the crime, but also the fact that the accused was staying on the island illegally.

The incident occurred in early May 2025. Police responded following a report that two men were cutting up an animal carcass in the parking area of a residential building. At the scene, officers discovered kangaroo meat, an axe, knives, and bags containing already sliced pieces. One man fled before police arrived, while the other — a migrant without legal status — was detained.

During the investigation, it was established that the kangaroo had been taken from a private, unlicensed “animal facility” in the Paralimni area. The Veterinary Service emphasizes that such illegal establishments are extremely difficult to detect, as inspections in private homes are carried out only in response to complaints.

The police continue searching for the second participant and the pickup truck driver who, according to the investigation, transported the animal from the farm. Authorities stress that cases of animal cruelty are treated as serious offenses and will be strictly prosecuted.
