Cyprus Issues Wildfire Warning Ahead of High-Risk Season
As the wildfire season approaches its peak, the Forestry Department of the Republic of Cyprus has issued a public warning, urging residents and visitors to avoid any actions that could spark a fire.
In a statement released today to mark European Natura 2000 Day, officials stressed that the risk of wildfires is growing by the day. Firefighting units across the island are already fully deployed and on high alert, with rapid response teams ready to act immediately in case of an outbreak.
• This year’s wildfire awareness campaign carries the slogan: “The Forest Needs You.” It’s a clear call for everyone to play a part in protecting Cyprus’s forests—especially those within the Natura 2000 network, a European initiative aimed at safeguarding critical habitats and endangered species.
Cyprus is among the EU leaders in Natura 2000 land coverage, with a large portion of the island included in this vital environmental network. Forests make up over 70% of these protected areas, forming the core of the island’s natural heritage.
Officials also highlighted that May 21 is officially recognized as European Natura 2000 Day—a time to celebrate the island’s unique natural beauty and reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect it.
• “Protecting our forests is a duty we all share,” the department emphasized.
