The number of mutual crossings at border checkpoints has increased in Cyprus
In Cyprus, compared to the previous year, the number of crossings by Turkish and Greek Cypriots has increased. From January 1 to September 30, 2023, 1,206,767 Greek Cypriots entered the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). For the same period in 2022, this figure was 1,030,020 Greeks.
According to the Filelefteros publication, during the first nine months of 2023, 777,397 vehicles belonging to Greek Cypriots crossed the border into Northern Cyprus. In 2022, 658,927 cars from the southern part of the island arrived.
At the same time, from the beginning of 2023, 1,007,060 Turkish Cypriots crossed on foot (compared to 775,411 people during the same period in 2022). In the first nine months of this year, 399,045 vehicles belonging to Turkish Cypriots crossed the border; last year, during the same period, this figure was 319,081.
The publication reports that a total of 2,213,827 Turkish and Greek Cypriots crossed through the border gates until September this year, while for the same period in 2022, this figure was 1,805,431 people. It is noted, however, that the data does not include the number of people and vehicles crossing the borders with Southern Cyprus through the "Strovilia" gate (Akyar).
Citizens of other countries traveling from Southern Cyprus to Northern Cyprus and vice versa are also not included in these figures.
