Cyprus Reports First Influenza A Death of the Year
Cyprus has recorded its first fatality from Influenza A this year. According to the Ministry of Health, a 43-year-old man passed away in the intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital. Five other patients are currently in critical condition in hospitals across the island.
The Ministry noted that the deceased was the youngest patient recently admitted to intensive care due to the flu.
At present, one patient remains in the ICU at Larnaca General Hospital, two are being treated at Limassol General Hospital, and two more are in the ICU at Nicosia General Hospital.
Beyond those hospitalized, a significant number of people are confined to their homes, recovering from Influenza A infections.
Healthcare authorities are urging the public to take proactive steps to prevent the further spread of the virus.
Recent reports have also highlighted that hospitals in Cyprus are struggling to cope with a surge in seasonal respiratory infections. Occupancy rates at most hospitals have surpassed 90%, with patients being treated for COVID-19, Influenza A, and other respiratory illnesses.
The sole exception is Makarios Hospital, where occupancy currently stands at 60%.
- "The healthcare system remains under considerable pressure due to the spike in viral infections. State hospital ICUs are seeing a high number of admissions, and the demand for inpatient care is exceptionally high. OKYPY is taking all necessary measures to meet the needs of patients," the health service stated.
