First viper bite of the season registered in Cyprus (Larnaca) — victim hospitalized

The first venomous snake bite of this season has been recorded in Cyprus: an elderly man in Larnaca was taken to the hospital after a viper bite, according to a representative of the Department of Forests (Τμήμα Δασών).

According to Biodiversity Inspector of the Department of Forests, Haris Nicolaou (Χάρης Νικολάου), snakes became active approximately 1–2 weeks ago. There are eight species of snakes living on the island; three species are venomous, but the viper — Lebetine viper or fina (Macrovipera lebetina) — is primarily dangerous to humans, the specialist noted.

The Department of Forests issued recommendations for residents: make household plots "unwelcoming" for reptiles by removing trash, tall grass, and stored firewood. When going out into nature, it is advised to wear high shoes and long trousers, stay on cleared paths as much as possible, and avoid areas with obstructed views.

According to the department, an average of 2–3 cases of venomous bites per year have been registered over the last decade. In case of a bite, it is necessary to contact a hospital immediately — anti-venom serum is available in all medical institutions on the island. Specialists also warn against using outdated "folk" first aid methods.
