Larnaca to Celebrate New Year with 'Silent Fireworks'
This New Year’s Eve, Larnaca will introduce “silent fireworks” as part of its celebrations. The municipality made this decision in response to public concerns, aiming to safeguard the well-being of the city’s animals from the loud noise typically associated with traditional fireworks displays.
Silent fireworks are designed to produce less noise by using a reduced amount of flash powder. Flash powder, a mixture of an oxidizer and metallic fuel, is the component responsible for the loud bangs during standard firework explosions.
Animal welfare organizations have long voiced opposition to traditional fireworks, citing their negative impact on animals as well as on certain groups of people.
- “The use of fireworks has gotten out of hand, causing serious problems for children with autism, elderly individuals, and both domestic and wild animals,” stated an animal protection group.
By adopting silent fireworks, Larnaca is taking a significant step toward balancing festive traditions with the community's concerns for inclusivity and animal welfare.
