The first pink flamingos have arrived at the lakes of Cyprus
The first flamingos have arrived at the salt flats and lakes of Cyprus. During this period, these beautiful migratory birds make a stop on the island before continuing further north.
The first pink flamingos of the year were captured by the cameras of Alpha News at the salt lake of Larnaca.
It is noted that if weather conditions permit, the birds may stay on the island for an extended period. A similar phenomenon was observed a few years ago at the salt lakes of Limassol.
Every year, between 10,000 to 15,000 flamingos migrate to Cyprus, mainly from Iran and Turkey. However, to enjoy their presence, one should be extremely cautious, as flamingos are very sensitive. Therefore, it is advised not to startle the birds by entering the lakes, approaching them at a short distance, or flying drones near them.
Pink flamingos are a protected species, and the locations where they can be found are under state protection. We have compiled a list of the lakes in Cyprus where these birds come for the winter.
