Excess Pesticides Found in Imported Apples in Northern Cyprus
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus reported that two samples of imported apples exceeded the permissible levels of plant protection products. The results were obtained during routine inspections conducted from October 17 to 23.
Out of 48 samples of imported products, 46 were deemed safe; however, two — Golden apples from Non Foods Ltd. and Gala apples from REE Tic. Ltd. — showed pesticide levels above the established norms.
By decision of the supplier companies, the batch of Golden apples was returned to the country of origin, while the Gala apples were destroyed. Inspection of local products (7 samples) revealed no violations — all domestic produce was deemed safe.
The Ministry stated that control over imported agricultural products will be strengthened. All batches that do not meet standards will either be returned to suppliers or disposed of. Consumers are advised to purchase fruits and vegetables only from official sellers and to pay attention to labeling and product origin.
