Worker Killed After Timber Stack Collapses at Peyia Construction Site
Cyprus has witnessed its second fatal workplace accident in just a matter of hours. A 34-year-old construction worker lost his life in Peyia after being crushed by a falling stack of timber.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday at a construction site in the Agios Georgios area of Peyia.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the timber was being lifted by a crane when the supporting beam suddenly gave way, causing the entire stack to collapse onto the worker. The construction site has been cordoned off as authorities continue their investigation.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident: a 64-year-old Greek Cypriot man who was operating the crane, and a 46-year-old Syrian national responsible for overseeing the site.
This tragedy comes just hours after another fatal workplace accident in Limassol, where a plumber died after falling headfirst into an elevator shaft at a high-rise construction site in Germasogeia.
