The Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus has been appointed
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Major General Erdenbat Batsukh as the Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
In a statement from the UN press service, it is mentioned that Erdenbat Batsukh is originally from Mongolia. Before being appointed as the commander of UNFICYP forces, the officer held numerous high-ranking positions both in his home country and within the UN and NATO. In addition to serving in the Mongolian army, the Major General has also carried out international duties under the auspices of NATO and the UN in Iraq, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Sudan, and Liberia.
It is worth noting that UNFICYP, one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, has been present on the island since 1964.
Erdenbat Batsukh succeeded Norwegian Major General Ingrid Gjerde as the commander of the UNFICYP forces. In its statement, the UN thanked the previous commander for her work.
