Nationwide three-hour strike to take place in Cyprus on September 11 due to disputes over cost-of-living compensation
Almost all sectors of Cyprus’ economy will be affected by a three-hour nationwide strike scheduled for September 11 from 11:00 to 14:00. The decision was made by the largest trade unions after unsuccessful negotiations between employers and employees mediated by the Ministry of Labor regarding the payment of cost-of-living allowance (CoLA).
According to the Peo union, workers from construction, municipalities, airports, educational institutions, and the private sector confirmed their participation. Exceptions will be services that maintain minimal staffing — primarily hospitals, where the necessary level of care and safety will be ensured for patients.
Union representatives stated that the strike is a warning action and will be the first major event since 2023. The Ministry of Labor noted that negotiations on CoLA should continue to maintain industrial peace on the island. At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve) warned of risks to the economy and called for responsibility from both sides.
For residents of Cyprus, the strike means possible disruptions in municipal and government services, transportation, and some private companies during the specified hours. This may affect school schedules, administrative offices, and other vital structures. Information on which departments will operate or close is expected to be published in the coming days.
According to the Ministry of Labor, such strikes occur during prolonged disagreements over wage increases and compensations. It is recommended to consider possible limitations when planning errands and visits to government offices on September 11.
