Fruit bats to return to Mavrokolimbos dam tunnel after repairs completed
The colony of fruit bats will return to the Mavrokolimbos dam tunnel in Cyprus after repair works and tunnel cleaning, scientists and staff of the Department of Environment reported on 6 October 2025.
Since 2024, the tunnel has regularly hosted a population of the protected species Rousettus aegyptiacus — around 800 individuals. Experts noted that this species is highly adaptable and uses alternative shelters, moving regularly in search of safe places.
When the structure was damaged and water diverted, detection sensors showed that the animals left the tunnel before it was partially flooded, so the colony members were not trapped and did not perish. After repairs and cleaning, the tunnel space is now considered suitable for the bats’ return.
According to scientists and Department of Environment staff, once the tunnel’s normal level and condition are restored, the bats will return to their previous habitat on their own when they perceive no threat. This will allow the species to once again use the tunnel as a roosting and resting site.
