Police in Cyprus to be equipped with body cameras and patrol car cameras
Police officers in Cyprus may soon start wearing cameras directly on their uniforms and gear. The bill has already been urgently discussed in parliament, and if passed, the innovation could be implemented within the next month.
Cameras are planned not only on officers’ clothing but also in patrol cars. Everything that happens during arrests and operations will be recorded on video.
Benefits:
- transparency of police actions
- protection of officers themselves
- video evidence for court
The recording will not be continuous but only when necessary. People will be informed — the camera will have a blinking indicator, so no secret recordings are planned.
Parliament assures that citizens’ rights and freedoms are taken into account, and the law will comply with the Constitution and EU standards.
